Refinishing the Band Building Floors

In the week of Aug 12, club members volunteered to refinish the floors of the Festus Band Building, where the club has its meetings.  The process took almost a week, but with amazing results.

Old business

  • Craig still needs to follow up on Meals on Wheels for the donation
  • Floor: Mon Aug 12 – Fri Aug 17
    • Remove shoe molding and make sure there are no nails.
    • Patch some of the very bad spots. Jim has some wood we can use for that.
    • Craig will pick up the sanding machines and sandpaper
    • Sander and crew will arrive on Tuesday
    • Start the stain and/or polyurethane process Wednesday
    • Replace shoe molding as last step (purchase new instead of using old
  • Pens for troops:  Craig is going to order 125 pen kits.  We won’t order any pen blanks. Plan to still give them out at Jefferson Barracks.
  • Terry is going to contact the Woodlands for the birdhouse project.
  • Craig still needs to take the lathe home to work on the switch.

New business

  • Twin City Days: Sept 7 9:00-4:00 at the Library
    • Need more turned items to sell
    • Jim moved that we do twin city days at the library and donate the money to the food pantry. Motion was seconded and passed.
    • Craig will bring one tent.  Gary has tables.  Keith may be able to bring another tent.
  • T-Shirts:  Craig will follow up with Joe.
  • Opportunity for Girl Scout demonstrations on Oct 5 in Pevely.  Tim moved we do it and the motion carried.
  • Craig will check on the date for fall turning day at Paul’s.
  • Library Displays start in September.  Gary will get the information to Craig.

The President’s challenge was a wall hanging.  There were 6 entries, Winner was Roger.

Old business

  • Firecracker Festival – Had 2 tents and demonstrated and sold a few items, not a lot of buyers.  There was concern that very few people did the work. Joyce moved that money should go to Meals on Wheels, Gary Seconded, motion carried.
  • Waiting on the city to find a free time to refinish the band building floors.  Jim will follow up.  Gary, Bruce, Jim, Pat, Glen, Joyce and others have volunteered to help.

New business

  • Pens for troops – Had a motion to do this again and it carried-  motion to use fall turning day at the band building to teach pen turning for the project.  motion carried.  Plan to make 125
  • One of the lathes has some issues starting.  Craig is going to take it home and see if it’s the switch.
  • Need to find a nursing home for this year’s birdhouses.  suggestion of the woodlands in Arnold, or some smaller ones in Festus.
  • Carrie encouraged everyone to go to the AAW conventions if possible
  • Gary has end grain sealer if anyone needs it. Need a new place to store the drum–Mike Short has a place.
